First of all, it standardizes a release schedule and releases in general, whereas coreboot is rolling-release more or less (I realize they have official releases with numbering, but it isn't related to usability or state of code in a direct manner). I.E.: "known good release". Moreover, libreboot makes building the coreboot sources much more simple and streamlined. So far, most of the deviation from older versions of libreboot shows up in the form of adding boards that aren't fully libre.
