I myself am a longtime Arch Linux user, and since about a year ago, I started with Parabola, too. But now I will speak for the Purism, SPC. For all of you who haven't heard about us: in short, we are trying to manufacture laptops ("Librem") that will be completely free from proprietary/binary software and firmware. You can find out more about our goals and current status on our website: https://puri.sm. Now, to the point. Besides our PureOS (Debian based OS, without non-free), we want to offer other distros as an option to our customers. Those will come on an USB drive, with small fee just to cover the USB cost and labour. We are considering to offer Parabola live install image as well, therefore, we want to ask if this is okay with the Parabola community? We decided to go for Parabola because we did some research and we found it to be the most "free" of all other endorsed distros, as well as we think its bleeding edge software can support our hardware without problems. We even based our own process of liberating our PureOS on Parabola's "your-freedom" blacklist. I'll be happy to answer any of your question, and I'm inviting you to check out our forums (https://forums.puri.sm/), tracker/wiki (https://tracker.pureos.net/) and perhaps jobs list (https://puri.sm/jobs/). Also, as a personal opinion: I ask that you think carefully before making another free/libre system distribution. It's best that you install/provide Parabola as it is. See [[https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html]], in the paragraphs before the table in the first section. I like the idea as long as the process is publicly documented and reproducible. I think there are/weree people working on a Live ISO for parabola. Don't know whether a custom installer is needed, but it is maybe in parabola DIY spirit that the instaler is a two window panel with the documentation and a console to execute each task (and graphical tools for i.e. partition). Which would be your approach to instalation? AFAIK, the parabola build system isn't publicly documented and reproducible as it currently stands. It would be great to see this happen though. > > I think there are/weree people working on a Live ISO for parabola. The CLI version of parabola works fine as a live ISO. I don't know about the MATE desktop version though. > > Don't know whether a custom installer is needed I am not a official developer, but I suggest either using the default ISO, and building from (on top of) that (there's probably a way to repack an ISO with modifications and/or scripts, I have done so before with Debian, but never parabola [1]), or failing that taking a look at parabolaiso [2] to completely rebuild a customised ISO. (... I think Adonay was nudging for the former method.) In both cases, the source code will need to be provided by puri.sm; most liberally if you are to distribute, probably in the most practically reproducible form where possible (build system), but also for the binaries or machine code for the software you distribute (parabola). I assume you are already doing this for the Debian based OS, so shouldn't be too much of a problem for puri.sm to do the same for Parabola. I think a good way to distribute the sources for projects like these, would be to first set up a mirror from which you intend to distribute them. As long as the mirror is in sync with the parabola servers, this would be a good method or flow for [legally] constructing customised free software operating systems in general, not just for parabola, but other distros too. If the mirror is added to the list of parabola mirrors, it would also go some way to reducing the load on the official parabola servers. It would also mean that you could theoretically continue to produce ISOs, even if the internet were to go down. This is a fairly small release, but with a few potentially BREAKING CHANGES: Potentially BREAKING CHANGES from 20170512 to 20170705: - lib/conf.sh: * The load_files() and check_vars() functions got merged into one load_conf() function. Any external programs that used conf.sh will need to be updated. The only such program I know if, the autobuilder, has already been updated and is ready for this change. * Previously, conf.sh kinda-sorta worked in /bin/sh; now it positively requires bash. - librerelease: * The syntax of the `REPODEST` configuration item in libretools.conf has changed. You will need to merge any .pacnew files before you are able to resume using librerelease. This change enables the port number to be set here, which means that new users will no longer have to separately configure their ~/.ssh/config. Other changes from 20170512 to 20170705: - librerelease: * Better error handling around config parsing. * GPG signatures created by librerelease are no longer ASCII-armored; they are now in the binary format. * Improve --help text. - libretools.conf defaults: * Include the 1863 port number in the default values. * Adjust for the librerelease's change in the REPODEST syntax. - lib/conf.sh: * BUGFIX: Allow nesting of LIBREUSER (user->root->user). This means that when libremakepkg runs `pkgbuild-check-nonfree`, p-c-n uses the correct values for LIBREUSER and LIBREHOME when loading its configuration. This fixes an issue with the autobuilder. - lib/messages.sh: * NEW: Added EXIT_* constants, for more consistent exit code meanings across programs * BUGFIX: setup_traps(): When handling an error, leave stdout alone; everything should be done on stderr. - more tests - tidy HACKING documentation Finally, because of Joseph's recent call for localization of pacman2pacman, I would like to reiterate that libretools is entirely internationalized, but still needs localized (translated). I'm now adding a `po/HACKING` file to document how to add translations. -- Happy hacking, ~ Luke Shumaker From lukeshu at lukeshu.com Wed Jul 5 22:18:37 2017 From: lukeshu at lukeshu.com (Luke Shumaker) Date: Wed, 05 Jul 2017 18:18:37 -0400 Subject: [Dev] libretools 20170705 release announcement In-Reply-To: <87h8yqlfhs.wl-lukeshu@lukeshu.com> References: <87h8yqlfhs.wl-lukeshu@lukeshu.com> Message-ID: <87eftule82.wl-lukeshu@lukeshu.com> On Wed, 05 Jul 2017 17:51:11 -0400, Luke Shumaker wrote: > Other changes from 20170512 to 20170705: Oh, I missed one: - librechroot: * Ensure that makepkg.conf is always parsed as text, not binary. First to clear things a bit: we do not want to fork Parabola GNU/Linux. We find it great as it is and we want to provide it to our customers AS IT IS. Since we are more leaned towards Debian GNU/Linux, we are using our PureOS (derivative of Debian but GNU FSDG compliant - or at least that's what we are trying to accomplish) as our base system. Bottom of line: we simply want to get the official ISO image from your website and "burn" it (with `dd` or something like that) to an USB key. If you have other suggestion for us regarding this, we are listening. Parabola GNU/Linux will be optional, on an USB key, charged only a small fee for the device itself (we don't intend to have any margins here). Cheers, - -- Mladen Pejakovi? The only problem you might have is if someone who buys a key asks for the sources, then you'd still have to supply them in a reasonable time frame, because of the licensing conditions. The best way to see if the iso will run on a usb key, is to dd the iso yourself and test. It shouldn't be too difficult; you appear proficient enough. And I think you may be correct in thinking that this should work. The licence (GPL) also states that there are no extra restrictions (eg. commercial): You are allowed to sell copies. Of course, you cannot change the terms of the licence without everybody who contributed to the parabola base agreeing, so legally you must make sure that you are able to provide the sources, if they are requested by your customers. As you or your customers are, or will be, generally using the usb as an installation medium, that should run in ram (may be wrong on this), and not a 'portable installation' of parabola, really you shouldn't need to pacstrap. Instead, dd should suffice and be just fine. Someone can correct me if anything I have said is wrong or out of the ordinary, Josh > I'll try to answer to multiple questions at once. > > First to clear things a bit: we do not want to fork Parabola GNU/Linux. > We find it great as it is and we want to provide it to our customers AS > IT IS. This is the relevant point. There is nothing here to stop you from deploying parabola on your devices and sell them. I'd only ask for two things: a) make sure that any issues and defects experienced by your users make it to our attention, either via this mailing list or our issue tracker. the feedback of more users helps us improve our system. b) (highly optional) provide us with a small number of devices in advance so that we can make sure our system works well before you ship to your customers. this is a problem becuase it is the graphical installer that those least tech-savvy of users will choose and this was the very reason that made an upgraded ISO an urgency since then i have created a new ISO with parabolaiso based on LXDE/openbox and have customized the "user-friendly" graphical calamares installer for parabola - i am also investigating if it is worthwhile to adapt the 'manjaro-tools' ISO builder to parabola - it has several attractive properties over archiso - notably, it includes dozens of configurations for different WM/DEs and also it creates calamares configurations automatically - it may be a lot of work to adapt for parabola but it is interesting and it should be noted that the current parabolaiso has not seen it's upstream since 2013, so updating that could be a significant amount of work itself i understand that these user-friendly graphical installers are not such a priority in the arch world but, for better or worse, parabola has been attracting many non-technical casual desktop users lately and such features are extremely important to them - it is exactly the arch reputation that intimidates people from trying parabola - with a pretty graphical installer and the octopuss program parabola can be made to be quite appropriate for the casual desktop use-case as well this does not only apply to parabola - free software generally is not known for it's user-friendliness but non-technical folks are the majority of PC users and so in order for FOSS to thrive, the issue of user-friendliness deserves much more attention than it currently gets - IMHO that is clearly the reason why ubuntu and mint are the most popular nixes manjaro, for example, is more popular than arch because it appeals to both experienced and casual users alike (manjaro is actually 3rd place on distrowatch now - above ubuntu - for comparisson arch is 14th place) - i think that parabola (certainly hyperbola) should aim to be not the libre arch equivalent as it is now, but the libre manjaro equivalent, something that is not quite so scary for the folks who would likely choose trisquel as their first libre distro in any case, if parabola is to have any graphical ISO at all, the existing MATE ISO should really be replaced ASAP - it is not clear how exactly parabola goes about the peer review process but if anyone would like to test these builds, please do - or perhaps i could just upload a pre-made beta ISO somewhere if others just want to evaluate and critique the artifact - whichever is the best way to get more eyes on it and move the project forward that is fine by me as it is, the LXDE-systemd ISO has the quite ugly default theme and does not have the calamares installer in it yet but that is very close to ready though it too could use some beautification - LXDE uses GTK themes so the 'parabola' theme from the MATE install can probably be used easily - this LXDE-systemd ISO could be released nearly as is, but i would want to make that look a bit prettier and more importantly, to have more eyes on it besides my own, WHILE it is being worked on - clicking everything to make sure it is a useful liveCD and installer before considering it production ready - it is unclear to me how far the 'adhocracy' approach should extend - but at some point, peer review becomes essential and that point is somewhere between the prototye and release feel free to open particular issues on notabug: * https://notabug.org/bill-auger/parabolaiso * https://notabug.org/bill-auger/calamares to build the LXDE ISO: ``` git clone https://notabug.org/bill-auger/parabolaiso git checkout lxde cd parabolaiso/config/lxde-systemd ./build.sh -v -T x86_64 -V "`date +%Y.%m.%d.%H.%M`-alpha" ``` both the -T and -V are optional - the -T value can be either 'x86_64' or 'i686' - without the '-T arch' it will build the dual ISO - the '-V date' is just to make the output filename different for each development build to build and launch the calamares installer: ``` git clone https://notabug.org/bill-auger/calamares git checkout parabola cd calamares ./mk ``` this one still has some rough edges - there is a PKGBUILD also but i have not verified that it works correctly yet - the ./mk script is what i have been using for development some notes on the design decisions: the new ISO configs have some immediate advantages over the MATE ISO already - for one, octopi does not work on the MATE ISO because the auto-login is root - the LXDE ISO logs in a the 'parabola' user with password-less sudo so octopi actually works as expected - secondly the MATE ISO requires an internet connection to install and downloads the entire operating system - this is quite different than any other liveCD ive ever seen - typically a liveCD will decompress it's squashfs onto the target disk as the base for the installed system so that the OS can be installed without a network connection - of course, that is not the "arch way" so i understand why that design decision was made - but it is not very practical - the user must download this 2GB ISO which contains 2 complete operating systems (32-bit and 64-bit) when the user will almost certainly only use one - immediately this initial download could be cut in half simply by making separate 32-bit and 64-bit ISOs - next, upon installing, the user then downloads again an entire operating system as packages via pacstrap - clearly, this is ridiculous - for this reason i have customized the ISO build script to allow making either the dual-target ISO, or one each for only x86 or x86_64 - also, they carry all of the packages necessary to install the complete system without any network connection - this of course make the ISO much larger again but this allows it to install via pacstrap the "arch way" instead of exploding the SFS - it can be debated whether or not this "best of both worlds" approach is justified, but although it is still wasteful, i consider this to be more reasonable than having two complete operating systems in one ISO when the user is almost certain to only use one of them - it is no more difficult to make separate 32-bit and 64-bit ISOs, takes no more time, and makes each one half the download size notes on progress: the 'lxde-system' ISO config is working and does what it says on the tin - the 'lxde-openrc' ISO config is a work in progress - it will build an ISO but it does not yet boot fully - note that the difference here applies only to the LiveCD environment - the final installed system depends only on the configuration of the calamares installer - i left the existing MATE CLI install scripts in place as a fallback if for some reason the live xserver fails to launch the current calamares installs MATE with systemd - i am working now to get it to install an openrc system and other WM/DEs - eventually this should be able to allow the user to choose amoung various combinations of init systems and desktops this de-coupling of the ISO and installer and not re-using the SFS has the added advantage of allowing for any number of liveCDs (KDE,gnome,i3) to all reuse the same calamares installer package yet that same installer could be used to install any other init system or WM/DE configuration - e.g. a KDE-systemd liveCD (or any other) could install an LXDE-openrc system (or any other) -- (: Music is the Best :) -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... as i said though, the openrc ISO is not working yet but i will keep you guys posted i chose LXDE mostly because it is easy to configure using flat-files and all - because i wanted it to be easy to boot the CD and make customiztions (like the theme) and then easily transfer those change back outside into the build tree - many people do not care for LXDE but that is not important - i am working to streamline the entire process so that many WM/DE combinations are available - LXDE for now is a good compromise on simplicity and feature set while developing - it sertainly does not need to be "The" parabola desktop > I am not 100% sure about the installer. Can the ISO be built without? i am not clear what you are asking here - as i said, currently i did not yet put the calamares on the CD - so it is not only possible, but that is indeed how the current demo is at this moment - the calamares installer is going to be just another package so can be easily installed or not - that is actually the reson i did not put it in - because i would like to get that package into the repos first - but without and installer you only have a liveCD environment with no persistence - i dont see how it would make any difference if the installer were left out - one does not need to run the installer just because it is there - maybe i am mis-understanding the question -- (: Music is the Best :) -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Can the ISO be built >> without? Again, I think these are/were excellent choices. I like LXDE 'coz it's mostly C and I like OpenRC, because of it's cross platform advantages to/for other OSes as well as Parabola such as BSD and also it's compatibility with System V scripts. OpenRC is also written in C and sh, which are generally portable and appear on most systems (common), but are also better for bootstrapping from non-gcc C-only compilers, if one were to appear that could compile the linux kernel (it could reduce the trusting trust problem). Perhaps these weren't the reasons you had in mind, I don't know, but you seem to have made good choices as far as things go. > > i am not clear what you are asking here - as i said, currently i did > not yet put the calamares on the CD - so it is not only possible, but > that is indeed how the current demo is at this moment - the calamares > installer is going to be just another package so can be easily > installed or not - that is actually the reson i did not put it in - > because i would like to get that package into the repos first - but > without and installer you only have a liveCD environment with no > persistence - i dont see how it would make any difference if the > installer were left out - one does not need to run the installer just > because it is there - maybe i am mis-understanding the question Ok, great. The reason for asking whether the ISO could be created without the installer was because I am not to keen on CMake and C++. I think everything where possible should be written in C (only half jokingly) and I prefer shell and GNU Makefiles. But that's only my personal preference. What I am using to install at the moment is a script I modified and found on the interwebs, in combination with the CLI iso. I may send it to you, although I don't know the licence. You could probably search for the text online if you cared or if it was important enough. ... let me find that USB drive, Josh From bill-auger at peers.community Thu Jul 6 17:05:52 2017 From: bill-auger at peers.community (bill-auger) Date: Thu, 6 Jul 2017 13:05:52 -0400 Subject: [Dev] new graphical liveCD ISO In-Reply-To: <6bb4229e-4815-e656-03e6-328a47f8e2b9@openmailbox.org> References: <20170706153134.34oabnxmdg2qwatp@debian64> <595E5C1E.4060009@gmail.com> <6bb4229e-4815-e656-03e6-328a47f8e2b9@openmailbox.org> Message-ID: <20170706170552.ndk7iimurmuwinku@debian64> On Thu, Jul 06, 2017 at 12:21:39PM -0400, Megver83 wrote: > BTW, the Calamares fork I did it's based on Manjaro's, which supports i looked at Manjaro's first too but i noticed it was hundreds of commits ahead and hundreds of commits behing the upstream so i figured it was better to stick close to the upstream - the folks in the #calamares IRC channel also agreed that was a good idea i looked at your gitlab repo a bit - to noticed you started making some custom slides for the slideshow - thats great cause i always save design for last so mine still looks very plain -- (: Music is the Best :) -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... But bill-auger already answered that question: Parabola is a very attractive libre distro, up-to-date, stable, and awesome :) so any newbie to the GNU/Linux world might want sth. more user-friendly, but at the same time, with updated software (for better compatibility, test new software, etc.), which distro offers you that option? none (at least from the FSF-endorsed). I would not mention Trisquel if I talk about updated software. So being a bit more user-friendly with the installation is like a big step for newbies, there's a lot of people who do not use Parabola for the same reason, or simply install Manjaro and then migrate to Parabola, but there's nothing better than a fresh install :D Plus, no one says that we should leave CLI aside, we can have both, a CLI ISO and a GUI one. On the one hand there is user experience, and on the other hand there is architectural elegance. I cannot think of a solution. If the graphical installer is included, you lose some architectural elegance, if it's left out, you lose some user experience. As it is, I agree that parabola currently firmly lives in the architectural elegance camp, at least for the CLI version. I think most people would agree that the current MATE desktop is not architecturally elegant as it stands, nor the best for user experience, so whatever the decision with that, there is likely to be an improvement with the graphical iso regardless. I did think that you could possibly exclude the graphical installer and have it as a package instead, instructing users to download it, but that would break the new no-internet-connection aspect(s) of the installer. You could produce or remaster two graphical ISOs, one with the installer, one without, but I think that may be too much work and perhaps be too picky and be too much of an ask. It is already known that some people would want to dd to a usb and have an installer present. If I am correct in saying a dd'ed iso image from a usb runs entirely in RAM then few will be dding the image as a +RW portable OS, meaning they shouldn't care if an installer is present. All in all, I think in this case there is no real wrong answer, especially no wrong answer worth fighting over. TBH, I'd probably use the LXDE iso with the installer myself out of laziness and speed of installation. With that said and out of the way of, from a user perspective, I would like the command line version of parabola to have a command line installer too, both for LXDE desktop and cli installations. That way it could be based on the CLI sh install scripts. But I think for now Calamares is adequate and requires less work (it's apparent that much work has been put into Calamares already), but priority wise and without extremes, yes; CLI iso: 1. fairly 'minimal' 2. fairly 'usable' Graphical iso: 1. fairly 'usable' 2. fairly 'minimal' The reasons why it should be usable is fairly obvious. The reasons why it should be minimal is (in no order): 1. To save space. 2. So that you could compile it all. 3. Less compliated --> less breakages. etc. Note: Requires balance. It's free. LibreJS has a lot of false negatives. If you look at the .js files themselves (possibly needing to change ".min.js" to just ".js"), you will clearly see that they are free. Knowing this, I have put no effort in to working around LibreJS's deficiencies; I am not opposed to it (patches welcome), but I have put no effort myself in to it. -- Happy hacking, ~ Luke Shumaker From jc_gargma at iserlohn-fortress.net Fri Jul 7 03:55:36 2017 From: jc_gargma at iserlohn-fortress.net (jc_gargma) Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2017 20:55:36 -0700 Subject: [Dev] Orphan Libre package [kinfocenter] marked out-of-date In-Reply-To: <20170628175551.1110.8851@proton.parabola.nu> References: <20170628175551.1110.8851@proton.parabola.nu> Message-ID: <1620496.H6GvHYCzPs@iserlohn-fortress.net> > jc_gargma at iserlohn-fortress.net wants to notify you that the following > packages may be out-of-date: > > > * kinfocenter 5.10.2-1.parabola1 [libre] (i686): > https://parabolagnulinux.org/packages/libre/i686/kinfocenter/ * kinfocenter > 5.10.2-1.parabola1 [libre] (x86_64): > https://parabolagnulinux.org/packages/libre/x86_64/kinfocenter/ > > > The user provided the following additional text: I've attached a git format-patch to update kinfocenter to 5.10.3 -jc -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I would not mention > Trisquel if I talk about updated software. It's a personal point of view, but I find rolling release easier even for beginners. For sure, you may run in small glitches more often, but I've always had difficulties with debian version upgrades. I don't find the explanations in the debian release notes much easier than the Parabola install. > So being a bit more user-friendly with the installation is like a big > step for newbies, there's a lot of people who do not use Parabola for > the same reason, or simply install Manjaro and then migrate to > Parabola, but there's nothing better than a fresh install :D > > Plus, no one says that we should leave CLI aside, we can have both, a > CLI ISO and a GUI one. One difficulty in the install process, is that unless you know it by heart, you need the install guide. I still need it after several installs. I open it on my phone while installing on a computer. But it's not very convenient. Besides, some steps are described on another page, so one has to follow links. On a fresh install in a cli-based browser, it's an additional challenge for beginners. Also, when one first installs GNU+Linux coming from the proprietary world, one faces many choices: separate partitions or not, which size, lvm or not, which desktop manager. Learning all that takes quite some time, and install might not be the best one. Especially since one does not easily know the severity of a wrong choice. That makes a lot to grasp the first time, and can prevent people who don't have much time from trying. I started learning when I was a student. If I had to start now that I work, I couldn't do that first step. However, the diy philosophy shouldn't be abandoned, especially if it was at the root of the project. I don't know if it's feasible, but a compromise could be a 2?panes tmux or screen. In one of them would be a cli based install similar to debian, but that shows you the command before running it, and in the other one the install guide page for this step. It seems to me that this would remain close to the diy aspect, since the user would have to take the decisions, while assisting new users in understanding the process, and remaining in the cli, which I believe is important and fun to keep. > > El 06/07/17 a las 13:39, fauno escribi?: >> Megver83 writes: >> >>> Before I started with the branding, I look for the issue in the bug >>> tracker and found your version of Calamares for Parabola. When I remastered the Debian iso, I used a local repository to install the additional packages from. I'm pretty sure it's possible to (using a pacman config, or command line option) specify a local directory to serve as the repository. I'm not sure if you can spread pacman repositories across DVD mediums though, as I am not as familiar with parabola/arch linux in general. If it is possible, perhaps in future parabola could also be released as a series of DVDs containing the binary packages. > what i was trying to describe was that the rsync method would be a > replacement for `pacstrap /mnt base`, that depends on internet > connection, nothing more than that :) From bill-auger at peers.community Sun Jul 9 18:39:49 2017 From: bill-auger at peers.community (bill-auger) Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2017 14:39:49 -0400 Subject: [Dev] Calamares Installer (Parabola rebranded) almost ready In-Reply-To: <5961EDE1.3010002@gmail.com> References: <20170706152858.pzekfqgncw722zfa@debian64> <8fd4a5a2-9132-66bd-9dfa-f87a06cf457e@openmailbox.org> <87fue9qxbt.fsf@endefensadelsl.org> <871sps90p4.fsf@Lothlorien.i-did-not-set--mail-host-address--so-tickle-me> <87lgo04dz7.fsf@endefensadelsl.org> <20170707144343.f7cebfbqe7tuabgb@debian64> <87o9swf6fc.fsf@endefensadelsl.org> <5961EDE1.3010002@gmail.com> Message-ID: <20170709183949.3ajrgkuzsgo5krt5@debian64> yes josh sry - it is as simply as you think - i actually ansered to that before but accidentally replied directly to fauno instead of the list i only meant to underline that the "local pacstrap" feature is trivial - it only requires that the cache of packages that were downloaded by the parabolaiso build to NOT be deleted from the work dir so that they will exist in the ISO - then you run `pacstrap -c /mnt` and the -c directs pacstrap to use the local package cache instead of the empty one in the chroot - this obviously increases the ISO size but as i also said there is little utility in the dual-architecture ISO which doubles the ISO size also ive raised the issue of debian-style multi-disc "software packs" on the forum here https://labs.parabola.nu/issues/1149 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I was really suggesting using the "-C Use an alternate config file for pacman" option, and suggest a pacman config with "CacheDir = path/to/cache/dir". It's a shame pacstrap can't forward generic pacman arguments to pacman. As they are, I'm not sure either could work with a multi-disc setup, because the user wouldn't know which disc to put in. But if there was a way of informing them, perhaps using a package list, it could become a possibility. This is pretty much a bugfix release from 20170705, but also a minor change, and localization in to Spanish. Bugfixes from 20170512 to 20170705: - librechroot: * The `-n` flag (which selects the chroot to use) was being ignored; falling back to the configured default in `chroot.conf`. It was not ignored by `libremakepkg`, which resulted in weird errors when `libremakepkg` tried to call `librechroot` internally. - librerelease: * Previously, there had been a sequence of `rmdir` commands; some of which were expected to fail. Because of a change in its error handling in v20170705, that failing `rmdir` caused it to quit before it told the server to run `db-update`. This is now fixed. * Now runs HOOKPOSTRELEASE in the current directory, instead of `$WORKDIR/staging`. - librexgettext: * There were so many problems with it extracting messages for the messages.sh `flag` command. * Error messages about incorrect usage are now on stderr instead of stdout. Changes from 20170512 to 20170705: - build system: * The $(docdir) configuration item now works the same way as it does for GNU programs. The default is `/usr/share/doc/libretools/`, and it installs the documentation there; before the default was `/usr/share/doc/` and it installed the documentation files to `$(docdir)/libretools/`. - Localization into different languages: * The package has mostly been localized in to Spanish. If you have your locale set to Spanish, you'll start seeing messages from libretools in Spanish. Thanks, David ("megver83")! * Translators no longer need to install `ruby-ronn`; they can have it avoid running those commands by running `make po/files.generate` -- the po/HACKING instructions have been updated to reflect this. -- Happy hacking, ~ Luke Shumaker From bill-auger at peers.community Mon Jul 10 12:22:18 2017 From: bill-auger at peers.community (bill-auger) Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2017 08:22:18 -0400 Subject: [Dev] fossology in parabola Message-ID: <20170710122218.4tgoz7wayttgpjsd@debian64> some time ago i began adapting the fossology program to build on parabola - i hit some snags though but i submitted my changes to the upstream repo anyways - they are now asking me if it worthwhile to pursue debugging it and if i would maintain arch support for the fossology program - i doubt that arch ppl or parabola end-users would be interested in this but perhaps it would be useful for parabola internal use if you are not familiar with it - it is a PHP server program with a web interface that clones remote git and SVN repos or accepts tarball uploads then analyzes all files to detect licenses and copyright contacts and to manage the manual verification process for files that it could not auto-detect does anyone use this already? is this something that would be used or if were in the parabola repos? and in six months when it breaks will anyone care to keep it working? https://github.com/fossology/fossology/pull/864 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... It does not contain > any binary packages but allows users to upload PKGBUILDs that can be downloaded > by others. These PKGBUILDs are completely unofficial and have not been thoroughly > vetted, so they should be used at your own risk. secondly as i understand it, the PCR contains both PKGBUILDs and binary packages - i am assuming that the raeson for suggesting to remove them now is because they take up space - but the AUR is entirely PKGBUILDs which are just tiny text files that occupty only a negligable amount of space and therefore those could be kept available indefinitely - the only valid reason for removing them (other than freedom issues) would be if they are so old that will not build any more from the archwiki: > What is the difference between the Arch User Repository and the community repository? > > The Arch User Repository is where all PKGBUILDs that users submit are stored, > and must be built manually with makepkg. When PKGBUILDs receive enough community > interest and the support of a TU, they are moved into the community repository > (maintained by the TUs), where the binary packages can be installed with pacman. so i am suggesting that the PCR stores only PKGBUILDs that are installable at any time but only with the makepkg tool not directly in binary form with pacman - and that anyone is allowed to publish these without having the any credentials on the main production repo - in this way those package can remain available even if they are not maintained by anyone (for as long as they do not become broken) then parabola can state that those are "unofficial" and possibly broken or unmaintained so use at you own risk -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Just an update on notsystemd. Arch finally moved systemd 233 from [testing] to [core] on Thursday the 6th (both 233.75-2 and 233.75-3 were on [core] that day). Some of the FSDG patches had to be reworked a bit, but I had 233 on [libre] fairly quickly; on Friday the 7th. I was hoping have notsystemd 233.1 published that weekend, but I didn't get it done. I've had things come up during the week, and didn't have a chance to touch it during the week until yesterday. Anyway, I just wanted to put out an update that it's coming. Maybe I'll get it done this weekend, maybe not. I now notice that systemd 234 is on [testing]. Hopefully I'll get notsystemd 233.1 on [libre] before systemd 234 hits [core]! If not, I'll still publish notsystemd 233.1 before working on 234.1; I expect that the work from 233->234 will be minimal; most of the trouble is that 233 changed how mixed cgroup mode works. (aside: I see that 234 now officially supports Meson instead of Automake (Meson had been in git for a while). On one hand that's exciting. On the other hand, I'd put a bunch of work in to gutting out Automake for my own Autothing for notsystemd development.
