Here are some notes I took. Please comment if you have any insight. Users: - http: The http server (nginx), and nothing else - keys: The program that aquires TLS certificates (certbot), and nothing else - nobody: Someone was too lazy to figure out the proper user to use Groups: It is important to understand that fundamentally, a group grants permission to do something. - keys: * Grants users permission to read TLS private certificates. - http: * Grants users permission to invoke Mailman CGI scripts. * Probably other things too. - wheel: * Grants users permission to use `sudo`. - systemd-journal: * Grants users permission to read the full system journal. - log: * Grants users permission to read miscellaneous other logs (particularly the nginx logs). - git: * Grants users permission to SSH in to git at . * Probably other things too. - bzr: * Grants users permission to SSH in to bzr at . * Probably other things too. Permissions: - Don't go overboard with `chmod o-rwx`. If a file is :http, it's probably readable by litterally the entire Internet. There's no reason it shouldn't be readable by random local users. The list of things that shouldn't be world-readable is pretty small. - Avoid FACLs. Yes, they are useful. They are also confusing. Don't be clever. - The only files that should be owned by user=http are `/var/lib/nginx/`, `/var/log/nginx/`, and sockets of daemons (not running as `user=http`!) in `/run/` - When deciding the owner of files, a good question to ask is "who may reasonably be expected to modify these files"? If the answer is "nobody", then the owner should be 'root'. If the answer is anyone else, the owner should be that user. * Exception A: SUID programs, obviously. Stories: - On Winston, `/srv/http/winston.parabola.nu/` was owned by 'lukeshu'. Some other well-meaning admin `chown -R`ed it to http:http, made it non-world-readable, and finally used FACLs to give 'lukeshu' read/write access again. Everything about those actions was wrong. They were probably thinking "leaving these owned by a normal user is a bad idea" (false, but we'll get there). But, user=http (nginx) should not be modifying the files; chowning them to that granted nginx unnecessary privileges, which is bad. The files are all served statically over HTTP (except for sysinfo, which is a CGI script of no particular secrecy). That is, the entire World Wide Web can read them, so there is no reason that local users shouldn't be able to; this just increases difficulty of administration and auditing. As long as the files are readable by nginx (umask=0022, yo), they should be owned by who/whatever may modify them. In this case, that happens to be lukeshu. There is nothing wrong with that. Action items: 1. On Proton, some files in `/srv/mailman/` are owned by user=http, but I'm not sure that they should be. 2. On Winston, `uwsgi at bzr` runs as uid=http. This is bad. 3. On Winston, `uwsgi at multimedia` runs as uid=http. This is bad. 4. On Winston, a whole bunch of files are owned by user=http. This is bad. 5. Answer "Probably other things too" questions above. 5.a. What privelege is granted such that on Winston, nshd has been configured to put hackers into the 'http' group? (this was done on July 23rd by coadde) 6. On Proton, why is nshd not being used? 7. On Winston, why has parabola-hackers been configured to allow SSH to http@ (despite SSH to it being disabled via /usr/bin/nologin)? -- Happy hacking, ~ Luke Shumaker From hahj87 at gmail.com Tue Nov 8 03:33:21 2016 From: hahj87 at gmail.com (Joshua Haase) Date: Mon, 07 Nov 2016 21:33:21 -0600 Subject: [Dev] [servers] User/Group security In-Reply-To: <878tsvqdru.wl-lukeshu@sbcglobal.net> References: <878tsvqdru.wl-lukeshu@sbcglobal.net> Message-ID: <87vavyabni.fsf@riseup.net> Luke Shumaker writes: > Action items: > > 7. Hi Quiliro. A rebuild (blender 17:2.78.agit1.e8299c8-2.parabola2) has been pushed to solve this issue. Mirrors could take some time to reflect the update. 0ad is a different kind of beast because [Community] packages come _as is_ from Arch, so we shouldn't have to update it. I've been chatting a little bit on and off with Emulatorman in #parabola on IRC about donating a build server virtual machine on a server I'm building. I've been running build servers for some other GNU/Linux distributions for a while now, specifically KaOS GNU/Linux (https://kaosx.us/about/sponsors/) and Chakra GNU/Linux. Its been my intention to setup a VM for Parabola to use as well but my current server has not had enough RAM to host more VM's so I've been working on something new. This is the parts of the specification of the new server I've been working on and a status on where I'm at with getting this deployed for everyone. There is more storage and such but that's not relevant to Parabola so I'm leaving that off. Motherboard: ASUS KGPE-D16 Libreboot with oprom loading disabled) Processor: 2x AMD Opteron 6284 SE (32 cores) RAM: 256GB DDR3 ECC 1600MHz CL11 VM Storage: 3x Intel 540s 1TB in encrypted RAID Storage Interface: ASUS PIKE 2008 SAS/SATA card (Oproms erased) Virtualization: KVM using libvirt Host OS: Parabola GNU/Linux-libre (What can I say, i like updated stuff even on my servers and you guys provide it :) The current status is that I have the server up and running with Parabola on a btrfs RAID1 on 2x Intel 730 240GB SSDs. I'm still waiting for 2 of the VM storage drives (540s 1TB) but will get them as soon as they're back in stock at the retailer I'm using (no current date though, hoping soon). Currently the system is running with 32GB of RAM (2x16GB sticks) but the full set of RAM is shipping to me right now and should arrive before December. Sourcing and putting together all this hardware has been an adventure in and of itself so my plans of having this ready summer of 2016 was completely missed. Provided I don't run into any more issues with the remaining hardware I'm waiting for the Parabola VM could be up and running in a day or two as soon as I get that hardware. The VM would have access to 30 or so cores (leaving some for my own small projects and the host) which it shares with the other build server VM's running on the host. I will probably start it off with at least 32GB of RAM since I wont be short on RAM for quite a while. Administration and maintenance of the build server will be left entirely to Parabola, I don't intend to interfere with how you configure and update it inside the VM. Choice of operating system is up to the Parabola project but I suspect you'll be wanting Parabola GNU/Linux-libre? :) Obviously since I do this as a hobby I cant give guaranteed up-time numbers or anything like that but I do take the precautions I can such as running it on a pretty powerful UPS and surge protector for example. Reboots will happen as I need to update things but usually I try to clear this with involved projects/people on IRC at least. Critical security updates will force reboots as is required though. I hope that I, together with M.E.W, can both help Parabola GNU/Linux-libre become an even better distribution in the future! If anyone has any questions you can find me as Dezponia in #parabola on freenode's IRC server and at dezponia at dezponia.se. -- // Dezponia Veil Den 2016-11-20 kl. 15:30, skrev M.E.W.: > Hi, > > i wanted to make a donation and saw that you need some build server for > security and security sounds good, so i like to help. Neither seem to be in PCR though [1]. I guess it may be easier for me to compile from source instead until someone is kind enough to add it for me. So we give you the option to have both installed at the same time! The Nonprism Repo[2] now includes *optional* packages that greatly strengthen the privacy and security of your system. These packages are: * iceweasel-hardened-preferences * icedove-hardened-preferences The scripts utilize firejail[3] to create a protected environment which does not have access to your entire computer. In addition, they include a hardened branding.js[4] which is placed prior to running the the program, and removed after you have closed the program. This allows the user to continue having both programs installed, while providing the ability to opt-in to privacy and security at any time by running the following new commands: * icedove-hardened * iceweasel-hardened - Please note that these scripts cannot run at the same time as the normal/non-hardened programs, but can be used interchangeably without issue. - Users wishing to further customize their hardened profile can place a User.js in their ~/.mozilla[5] Enjoy! Lately we could solve most bugs, but those require some manual installation steps that I want to explain here, and those possibly need additional information on the front page: Some (very old) arduino installations (somehow) left over the empty path /usr/share/arduino/hardware/avr which will cause a crash with the new arduino installation: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /usr/share/arduino/hardware/arduino/avr/platform.txt (No such file or directory) -> To resolve this issue you need to remove arduino and manually delete the folder. You might also want to check if there are any other folder zombies inside the arduino path. If this still does not help it might also be an idea to delete (backup before) ~/.arduino15 The 2nd issue is when people try to upgrade from an older version of arduino that provided arduino-builder. It will fail to install as the new version says "oh, arduino-builder is already installed". It then tries to remove arduino and the arduino-builder dependency is not satisfied anymore. This only affects a small number of versions, but still raise up on AUR. I am not sure if this got fixed in pacman by now. -> To resolve this issue you need to remove arduino first and then reinstall it. The version issue that some of you got seems to be only the case when you use a 3rd party tool like arturo. It got fixed now. Arduino now uses the upstream avr-gcc within the optional package arduino-avr-core which should be installed if you want to use avr boards. You can still use their older avr-gcc 4.9, see the wiki for more details. Since such many upgrade problems raised up, I think it is highly recommended to sum those up in a short news at archlinux.org and then push arduino to community. While people will likely have to remove their existing installation, I think it would also make sense to get rid of the current epoche value at the same time when it moves to community. As an alternative we could also rename arduino to arduino-ide and add a replace into the PKGBUILD. I am also working on getting the build system fix into upstream and also to sign their upstream sources. Thanks a lot for all the feedback so far from AUR and IRC! To sum up, the news should contain: * Remove arduino manually first * Delete /usr/share/arduino/hardware/avr if it still exists * check for other folder zombies in /usr/share/arduino * Install arduino * Consider to install the new optional deps arduino-avr-core and arduino-docs * Consider to also to start with a clean ~/.arduino15 folder if any other problem occurs * Read the wiki about further details or contact me personally Any comments on that? discovering this great distro. I like the way Arch Linux works a lot and I would like to switch to using only completely free distros. I used Arch Linux wiki a lot to configure Parabola/GNU, because I couldn't always find the info I needed on Parabola's wiki (and I'm willing to create some missing pages when I have time if I'm allowed to). One thing that I stumbled on is that the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace shortcut is on by default within Xorg, while it's specificaly off by default on Arch Linux ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Keyboard_configuration_in_Xorg#Terminating_Xorg_with_Ctrl.2BAlt.2BBackspace). I find that this behaviour is a small security issue because I'm used to use a minimal X screen locker that doesn't prevent the user to kill X using this shortcut to bypass the screen locker. As Parabola/GNU works like Arch Linux in many ways, I wanted to know if this is a recent change in Arch Linux that will be changed in Parabola, or if this is a desired behaviour in Parabola that then should be mentionned somewhere in the wiki (I think) because it can be a risky behaviour. I thought I should ask this question on some forum but I didn't find one so please forgive me if I'm not posting at the right place, I'm still learning how things work. Respectfully, Rapha?l M?lotte. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Since we now must check for and use https and GPG when that is possible[2], we should also consider making the switch to stronger hashes. Server cracks and MitM attacks could lead to the fetching of tampered source files that are used for package building. This can be dangerous when older packages must be rebuilt automatically or are modified. Using a weak hash function's message digests for verification could lead to the use of tampered source files without us noticing that. Especially when https and GPG cannot be used, it is a must to use strong hashes for verifying the integrity of the sources. **The usage of weak hash function algorithms (md5 and sha1) must be avoided.** sha512 must become the default. If upstream uses message digests of weak hash function algorithms, the message digests of those can also be included in the PKGBUILD files, and those message digests should be seen as an additional check. Stronger hashes have **no disadvantages, they can only improve security**. We should also change the default value of INTEGRITY_CHECK in /etc/makepkg.conf to use sha512 by default, as suggested multiple times on the bugtracker[1]. The wiki[3] needs to be changed accordingly to our new GPG, https and hash guidelines. We as ArchLinux Distribution should try to provide our Users the best security of our packages as well as the PKGBUILDs. Thanks for all your support! I just think that a modern graphical installer, with auto-partitioning, GPT, UEFI, LUKS support is a must in nowadays GNU/Linux. And since Calamares in under GNU license, ?why not applying this framework to our Parabola GNU/Linux-Libre installer? Thank you very much for you work, friends. "Arch Anywhere" installer is a little bit messy and buggy, about all, partitioning and GRUB. "Architect Linux" installer, since has no auto-partitioning is not appropriate for beginners. No so user friendly. Again, with Calameres and just only few clicks, you get a GPT+UEFI+LVM+LUKS full friendly install. This software is new to me, but I can tell it's not a GNU package and its authors don't call it "GNU Calamares" either --quite understandably-- so there's no merit in calling it that way. In case anyone wonders, that doesn't mean Calamares is bad for Parabola or the free software movement; on the contrary. There's a difference between simply using one of the free software licenses offered by GNU (like the nice GPLv3 used by Calamares) and being a package under the official GNU umbrella.
