Sorry, I also forgot to mention that I made scripts for getting the 
sunxi kernel and u-boot on the device with the alarm img.

Not sure how much work you've put into an alternate method, but this 
would probably need to be altered somehow anyway. I think the 
linux-libre project has a deblob script that would certainly need to be 
run over the kernel for it to be free.

Still, a rootfs img suitable for the device would be needed.
