I believe this is somewhat widely known, but DMD doesn't appear on the LibrePlanet wiki's list[1], and it is included in Parabola. Andr?, you overlooked the rsync rate part, which I think is important, especially as you're updating the repo quite often, and the number of reliable mirrors is reduced. Would it be useful to have a timestamp file that records the last update of each repository, so that a crontab can run, say, once every 10 minutes, and rsync only the relevant parts if another process is not running? Maybe 10 minutes is too fast, and probably instead of a polling mechanism, we should use a push notification (? la PSYC). Anyway at this point the only really useful mirror is the repo, and the rest of the mirrors tend to be outdated. If Daniel is fine with it, mirrors.linux.ro could become a fast mirror (also, it probably has more bandwidth than most other Parabola mirrors). If you are doing early KMS, you must construct your own EDID or you will run into problems. The makefile included in the Documentation/EDID sources of the kernel. [0] It says "The code (see drivers/gpu/drm/drm_edid_load.c) contains built-in data sets for commonly used screen resolutions (800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1920x1080) as binary blobs, but the kernel source tree does not contain code to create these data.", therefore it is nonfree! It should be reported to Linux-libre developers :S So, in my opinion you should follow the Late start mode [1] and pay attention on the first part that says "Remove all vga= options from the kernel line in the bootloader configuration file. Using other framebuffer drivers (such as uvesafb or radeonfb) will conflict with KMS. Remove any framebuffer related modules from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. video= can now be used in conjunction with KMS." There is a part that says "video= can now be used in conjunction with KMS", if the problem persists specifying resolution with video= command line may be useful. A mode can be forced on the kernel command line, but the command line option video is poorly documented in the DRM case. You can completely understand this data, possibly using a tool like parse-edid. The hexadecimal array can be used as source: the parsed version doesn't add any extra information (just like we accept binary PNG files instead of requiring the textual SNG files). Do you assume that there are no issues related to the lack of Radeon firmware that recent kernels need for modesetting or X on newer devices? -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Well, Jorginho has solved his problem because in this case it needed add the video parameters specifying a resolution on the kernel or a common boot loader like GRUB or Syslinux or LILO to works. Sometime ago, i had a similar problem with my Geforce 9800 GT card, and it was because with my previous monitor was an unknown model that generated problems with KMS because nouveau didn't knew it resolution. Otherwise, in my opinion radeon should works well with KMS without do anything and i don't think with these issues should be related to lack of Radeon firmware, but we should consider it too if even so, adding the video parameters the problem persists. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJUEuQuAAoJEOaXR1L5cERWtGgQAM+qeYpH6bv/UCpjmle7F9mN EZPLjyGfnvHl51eQwPWiHuC43gqcRPw/qTQP3ZEUcY3PMVKOOrn2D+Kpqa8W0lrP ncjrib862wdbF3XiBy+CA2oCEXkOdkm98pL6qw6I+MHeTCjJLg126a64tq0WhizI D8cWTciNzKeO0Knqte+ZrjWpHCKlGb0/oXWcJXSACMOhWO+yL6BTLh0qt5gbUzjP YMrkg/1QocT6zsDdH2MK44vVpr3PkO5iCMG6pdJqPRGad5u7qcKOtXJwjG3UHRnS GrZ1svtLBXNjwnFSgqcyNVrvF77SsA4eLgCkJWfr720gt8xO3KY7xzVsy1s1fwuP uqDtHM7p3YxlryUQNFKPI/yhK9DCnkXAcv4RsD927BpHWPISWN2i8EMO29sAWDKg 0DfFZYiWJsicxtEGdulq8l7dxSPKlTxOXy7U8SOEGm2NvtgSf+T35TViuYhaUQqa i/ZP8THSpaj3UAZYGUwNZXSmTCGag/gRItZkLIpqqpz8rNUY9PFu0DjKlh8epaXB WJqxsdHYkZs8bEwi3DYXUp8gXb8K4ZMJwdF9SKxcIL929ATtWlIhbpmBPNtt+kv7 wPahU8CppJ3u9MrWWiTdvMMdK7G8Phfdv7s8yqbuQjL3ec09rZC46hqOLU41txWk S5YGOxaWtULM99Jqz49Y =c3VI -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From mtjm at mtjm.eu Fri Sep 12 12:23:02 2014 From: mtjm at mtjm.eu (=?utf-8?Q?Micha=C5=82_Mas=C5=82owski?=) Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2014 14:23:02 +0200 Subject: [Dev] [Assist] Fwd: Re: Xorg Problem with Radeon In-Reply-To: <5412E42E.20408@riseup.net> (=?utf-8?Q?=22Andr=C3=A9?= Silva"'s message of "Fri, 12 Sep 2014 09:16:46 -0300") References: <87tx4i90zf.fsf@deshackra.com> <8761gxvr7n.fsf@deshackra.com> <540E93B8.5020700@riseup.net> <540EB140.8050907@riseup.net> <540F7CB2.4020604@riseup.net> <540FEF71.6060105@riseup.net> <541218C8.4060005@riseup.net> <54120D3C.8060907@riseup.net> <54121D30.1000108@riseup.net> <5412CC73.1090701@riseup.net> <5412D31E.1030405@riseup.net> <87wq99hz5b.fsf@mtjm.eu> <5412E42E.20408@riseup.net> Message-ID: <87ppf1hvtl.fsf@mtjm.eu> > Well, Jorginho has solved his problem because in this case it needed > add the video parameters specifying a resolution on the kernel or a > common boot loader like GRUB or Syslinux or LILO to works. KMS is enabled by default for autodetected AMD/ATI cards.[1] If an user wants to disable KMS, needs add nomodeset as a kernel parameter.[2] Otherwise, as of Linux-libre 3.9, CONFIG_DRM_RADEON includes KMS support by default, so i've removed CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS from our config files because it doesn't exists anymore.[3] [0]:https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#Late_start [1]:https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#Kernel_mode-setting_.28KMS.29 [2]:https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_Mode_Setting#Disabling_modesetting [3]:https://lukeshu.com/git/mirror/parabola/abslibre.git/commit/?id=c97f8be3b90679d7a8758e076b07b906cc5715e6 > X uses the vesa driver which chooses 1024x768. Micha? is right and like he says, you get black screen with KMS exactly due to lack of firmware which newer kernel versions made necessary for KMS. So you have 2 ways to solve it, use vesa for this video card or buy a new one with 100% free software support like my video card (Geforce 9800 GT) on Nouveau that doesn't needs blobs to use 2D and 3D features normally. There is a complete info in the Nouveau site about Nvidia chip code names and their corresponding official GeForce number [0], a featurematrix that represent big pieces of functionality (2D and 3D features) [1] and video acceleration support status of them [2], but you should pay attention before buy some of them, because some models needs blobs to works like your case. Otherwise, i've heard that intel video cards are a good alternative to get full support with 100% free software too, but i don't know much about that, maybe somebody could give you a better suggestion. Right. One search at google does tell lot of people facing issues with Nouveau . Though most people do not get such issues. Definetely I agree with Emulatorman about the wisest solution for Jorginho issue, buying an Nvidia is probably the best solution. I get shocked about "people facing issues" with Nouveau, since I replaced my ATI by a GT card and the real issue was trying to control emotion about the good and consistent performance it was delivering. Both 2D, 3D and vaapi/vdpau video hw acceleration is notable. Only an Intel GPU can beat the performance, but you know, there's no such thing as Intel PCI cards, all of them are embedded in chipsets. So I would say Jorginho to consult FeatureMatrix and decide which is the more aprorpiate for him: http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix/ "Junta unos ahorrillos para pillarte unade estas. Por menos de 50? yo me hice con la GT630 en una conocida empresa online donde explotan a nuestros camaradas... :P" In this case, note that KMS will be mandatory for a proper videocard initialization and X booting. I say it because my parents are artists and we help them on the post-production. Also in my free time, i like play games as Xonotic with High Definition configuration, and details like shaders and special effects are notorious because Geforce 9800GT has OpenGL 3.3 support on mesa in the latest versions :) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJUFDKCAAoJEOaXR1L5cERWNiwQANzMle/Emxjgo54p5OOba8OJ ISYRh/b0ZUAYAWZOyuQzKH01k8Pq8Dfgyizu4GN0nEgREbxNnlEiGR4qb/FJlwop kB7N3s18LNMevK3T7qJWNJILG1oexuW/xJBx8XA8Y5Q8qrBoaezr1OMyG9RiAlp8 tdVJcTGTKpVhQeMaCWyyqK0MtSzOskXj3+N1bSVpvk2V5Exiklp1gy67YToVqNMb KSkv8xQ7u7lXeOnTSXGGlIbxOAF64rqiLZjrh7s/HWPwO8msBe4xoFj8phoMFtoi zmSMdWwo0ZUsbRgWVa6LlwQcCkw0ot7Z4hf5Dt1CvtI7+HoW/dhNUP6dqniRPolD gvW/R8Ps5tpWVzc6LwC3nT1S+Nvhh76/krpp3JPAyyfodO+NWUe4PVT1RUF3988p Qa7bRpidhAHSKM+bIuT4MAH3f3TJ/Na25pz7vV38SaicK/57vyMOn9sVEEOkRAvw L1BqeyEuQxSaDGN9xTR7zC6rEzTv8ArD400x4GR9lR4moX1j3zBZdm5dEs7Pu67q I4uK+1+2oAM6tL9I8kjE/X1OAqViBkXsZ87vOcDCA2wzKTPp+5+TfNOljWl6F6FS J0HvbKkZrdkRTKukHh1Lc4HVea1qvSFwSz1+tE0HD6amxOP2PORfTyWnZlnyHW3c SuzSU5fSzOjrWzeWvsNn =JGBr -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From arnuld.mizong at gmail.com Mon Sep 15 17:00:45 2014 From: arnuld.mizong at gmail.com (arnuld uttre) Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2014 22:30:45 +0530 Subject: [Dev] [Assist] Fwd: Re: Xorg Problem with Radeon In-Reply-To: <54149D2F.5050901@riseup.net> References: <87tx4i90zf.fsf@deshackra.com> <8761gxvr7n.fsf@deshackra.com> <540E93B8.5020700@riseup.net> <540EA901.7030804@riseup.net> <541429FE.3010808@riseup.net> <54149D2F.5050901@riseup.net> Message-ID: > On 9/14/14, Andr? BTW, here is the dmesg and lsmod output from Arch (open-soure driver but I guess with binary-blob in kernel), gNewSense (totally free and works great with radeon) and PARABOLA (free like gNewSense but booting and X issues). We have the same configuration than Arch on the config files, but with some exceptions which aren't related to the problem [0] I think that it is due to lack of firmware which newer kernel versions made necessary for KMS.
