Unless db-remove is broken, "pacman -Qm" should list drivers which aren't useful on this hardware, they certainly aren't compatible with xorg-server 1.12 (xf86-video-fbdev and xf86-video-siliconmotion are the only useful video drivers for typical purposes, xf86-video-siliconmotion needs special configuration as described on the wiki; xf86-input-evdev is the only working and useful input driver unless having rare hardware like Wacom USB tablets). All other drivers are updated (xf86-video-siliconmotion has newer version in abslibre-mips64el, there is no need to update it now), the error doesn't occur with correctly configured newest versions of the packages. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... My proposal is to make librerelease run a script on repo and pipe to it the files to upload. The script verifies them and fails if one is incorrectly signed. Then, when all files are ready, it locks all databases used by them, checks if the same version is available for any of them, fails if yes (explicitly recommending adding .1 to pkgrel if the new version is needed), then updates the packages and unlocks the databases. librerelease outputs errors from the repo-side script. If multiple uploads including the same package are done at once, only at most one succeeds, others fail, the library uploaded must be the one From the successful run. The server-side script might log its output to the maintenance list. Locks: - one for all repos, or - one per repo and arch, needs correct ordering of their acquisition Benefits: - no duplicated uploads of a package (these contributed to the great pcre breakage affecting glib and grep on mips64el and made many corrupted package errors) - immediate error messages on failed upload, for the user who did the upload - no (theoretical yet, although possible) problems like updating xorg-server and drivers, while having only drivers updated due to missing xorg-server signature or (not sure if rsync prevents this) if the connection is interrupted while uploading xorg-server after drivers Some requirements: - a single (repo, arch, pkgname, epoch, pkgver, pkgrel) tuple refers to exactly zero or one released package - multiple uploads at once work, usually at least one succeeds - all errors make just the affected upload do nothing (and notify appropriate users), they don't affect other, correct, uploads - no deadlocks; interrupted uploads don't cause other problems - runs are quick, except for waiting for the files to be uploaded (no waiting for files of other users) Possible issues: - continuing interrupted uploads fauno recommended checking lockfile-utils for locking support (writing our would make more opportunities for bugs). We need lock-or-fail and unlock operations for a single lock or a set of locks. Any comments? Is it too complex, or too unreliable, are the requirements unsatisfiable, or ...? -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... The idea was to find a simpler way that doesn't require the granularity gitosis allows, that IMO hurts our horizontal approach, but it still had some degree of security... For this I found git-shell, a tool that comes with the git package and works as a user shell that only allows the git commands needed to push into repos. If you don't want to bother with the technical details skip to the all caps section of this email. I created a test user called "git2", with home /srv/git2 and shell /usr/bin/git-shell. Inside this home I mirrored abslibre.git to work on, and copied the .ssh from /srv/git (and cleaned up the stuff gitosis uses to work). This worked OK, except that you have to pass the full path of the repo to push, so if you cloned git://gparabola/abslibre.git you'll have to push into ssh://gparabola/srv/git2/abslibre.git Now, we needed a method to add new SSH pubkeys in an easy way. Since git2 uses git-shell I couldn't run `ssh-copy-id` unless I specifically enabled it, but it still lacked the accountability I was looking for, that is "X added the new hacker Y", instead of randomly saying on #parabola "Hey I added Y to the repos" or "fauno, when will you add Y?". I came up with this: Manage the SSH pubkeys with another git repo in a way that pushing into it gives immediate access to those keys to the git server. The history management would also allow the kind of accountability I already mentioned by using technical methods embedded on git itself ;) So I did this: I created a "hackers" git repo locally and added the authorized_keys file and a README explaining how to work with the repo. Under git2, I created "hackers.git" as a bare repo. Then I cloned hackers.git into .ssh and gave it the permissions ssh needs. On hackers.git I added a post-update hook that forces a checkout on .ssh, so anytime someone pushes a key to the server it gets immediately approved by sshd. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? * Simple and secure (!) way to add new hackers. * Any hacker can give access to new hackers, no need to depend on lazy admins. * Major implications for technocracy in general, so many I won't mention. ZOMG YOU BROKE X This isn't implemented yet, I'll do this during the week. Feedback is welcome. It will work as if they were done separately in an (unspecified) order (using the lock), unless some of them update the same packages. In that case only one upload would work, as if the conflicting uploads weren't run. > This is now addresed by uploading the packages to a ?staging? area, but > I do think we do need a way to stop outdated or same package version to > be uploaded. The script would make staging unnecessary. Disabling uploads downgrading packages should be done. I know only one case where such uploads were done for a useful purpose (iceweasel-libre). > I think this require use ABS or another thing as control for deps. It doesn't (although otherwise the script could also detect uploads without PKGBUILDs being available). Packages are compared with the ones in databases being updated by the script and used by pacman. The xorg-server cause would be handled client-side, by users uploading all packages that need to be updated together at once. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Name: not available Type: application/pgp-signature Size: 835 bytes Desc: not available URL: From lukeshu at sbcglobal.net Thu Apr 12 05:43:55 2012 From: lukeshu at sbcglobal.net (Luke T.Shumaker) Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2012 01:43:55 -0400 Subject: [Dev] [RFC] Adding DLAGENTS for git and other VCSs to makepkg.conf Message-ID: <87k41l7bdw.wl%lukeshu@sbcglobal.net> Abstract Given Parabola's policy that sources be downloaded prior to running a PKGBUILD file's build() function, we are creating multiple boiler-plate SRCBUILD files that all check out a specific commit from a version control system (VCS), and generate a tarball from it. Given that most VCSs are able to identify a commit just as permanently as a URL, or more so, it makes sense to to add a URL-handler ("DLAGENT") for URLs with a VCS SCM scheme, such as "git://". Permanence of availability concerns One of the primary objections to getting files directly from an VCS has been that there must be a permanence of availability, a user must have a guarantee that the source he is downloading is the source originally used to build the package. If we give the DLAGENT the ability to specify a commit ID as part of the URL (not traditionally done by VCS tools, more below), the commit is just as unlikely to change as any other URL is. Further, distributed VCSs (DCVS) typically have cryprographically secure hash IDs, for example https://github.com/nothingmuch/git-svn-abandon.git#42014bf555fdac67c8c82ed69c4733ab9dba0c8a is cryptographically assured to always refer to the same code. URL schemes for VCS tools VCS tools frequently use "pseudo-URLs". This necessitates using a wrapper program to (trivially) map between a URL and a VCS "remote repository", as well as getting the appropriate commit from the repository. Following are definitions for mappings for common VCS tools.another prot Git: git://${authority}/${path}[#${refspec}] git+${proto}://${authority}/${path}[#${refspec}] where * ${proto} is the scheme of the protocol being used to access the repository, if not git, sush as "ssh" or "http". * ${authority} is the "[userinfo@]host[:port]" string we all know so well, defined in RFC 3986. * ${path} is the path-part after the authority * ${refspec} is the git refspec of the commit. For our purposes, this is a commit hash, but it could be a branch or tag. SVN: svn+${proto}://${authority}/${path}[#${revnum}] where * ${revnum} is the revision number of the commit we are after Implications This would require adding a few lines to the DLAGENTS array in /etc/makepkg.conf, as well as requiring that a few wrapper scripts be installed. Other ideas I have some more ideas about decent caching/tar'ing of commit trees, but I'll have to tinker first. Questions What do you think of this idea? If you like it, should the wrapper scripts be packaged with pacman, or be a separate package? Sample implementation The following implementation is from an unrelated project I was working on that required pacman-like functionality. It is unsuitable for use by `makepkg`, however, displays the concept well. case "$scheme" in http|https|ftp) wget -c "$url" bsdtar -xf "${url##*/}" ;; svn+*) host="`echo "$url"|sed -r 's at .*://([^:/]*)[:/].*@\1@'`" data="`grep -F "$host" -- "$FRCUTILDIR/etc/svn-auth"`" if [ -n "$data" ]; then data="`echo "$data"|sed -r 's/\s+/\t/g'|cut -f 2-`" set -- $data auth="--username $1 --password $2" fi mkdir -p "$FRCUTILDIR/tmp/svn-config" svn co $auth --config-dir "$FRCUTILDIR/tmp/svn-config" "${url#svn+}" "$package" ;; git+*|git) nurl=${url#git+} base=${nurl%%#*} frag=${nurl#*#} frc msg2 "Pulling from GIT repository..." if [ ! -d "$package" ]; then git clone "$base" "$package" else cd "$package" && { git pull "$base" cd .. } fi if [ -n "$frag" ]; then frc msg2 "Checking out proper commit/tag/branch..." cd "$package" && { git checkout "$frag" cd .. } fi ;; esac From fauno at kiwwwi.com.ar Thu Apr 12 13:21:46 2012 From: fauno at kiwwwi.com.ar (=?utf-8?Q?Nicol=C3=A1s?= Reynolds) Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2012 10:21:46 -0300 Subject: [Dev] [RFC] Adding DLAGENTS for git and other VCSs to makepkg.conf In-Reply-To: <87k41l7bdw.wl%lukeshu@sbcglobal.net> References: <87k41l7bdw.wl%lukeshu@sbcglobal.net> Message-ID: <87zkahccgl.fsf@kiwwwi.com.ar> On Thu, 12 Apr 2012 01:43:55 -0400, Luke T.Shumaker wrote: > > Abstract > > Given Parabola's policy that sources be downloaded prior to running > a PKGBUILD file's build() function, we are creating multiple > boiler-plate SRCBUILD files that all check out a specific commit > from a version control system (VCS), and generate a tarball from it. > > Given that most VCSs are able to identify a commit just as > permanently as a URL, or more so, it makes sense to to add a > URL-handler ("DLAGENT") for URLs with a VCS SCM scheme, such as > "git://". Of course, the decision is that of the doer, but other solutions I would consider: * git-http-server: a CGI script allowing push over HTTP. Permissions are handled by the web server. Also: There are clones that may work better with certain setups, for example, jgit-http-server for Java, or Grack for Ruby. I'm not aware of any that are Python (we're running Python for parabolaweb anyway). * Girocco (the repo.or.cz software): a set of (mostly perl) CGI scripts. * Gitorious: Ruby on Rails, RESTfully designed, meaning it has an API we can use to integrate it with other software and script things. I mention scripting and integration because it will allow us to automate submodule repository creation, which you are iterested in. It also allows the possibility of integrating with parabolaweb, but I wouldn't hope for that. > I created a test user called "git2", with home /srv/git2 and shell > /usr/bin/git-shell. No, but it offers an alternative to SSH for authentication. Comparatively, HTTP authentication is easy to integrate with another source of user management. In fact, it looks like for ChiliProject/Redmine already has the capability to do this with git-http-server/Grack. Being able to use these tools in a free distro to install free software is needed for Python programmers or users of packages not packaged in the distro. Python Web applications and framework probably often recommend installing them via pip or similar tools, not by using distro packages. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Join the FSF.org! Here is a testing solution (works!) As said on the part above modify the install.py for the test you can use :: http://pbot.dyndns.org:8000/simple/ At this time it have just some packages to test Then try :: pip install a8 As you can see it get the code ...if you try another package which is not in the list, it will not goes to pypi. Mates, we have discuss about that in #parabola and we think that it represent an important freedom issue for all free distro. (for python webmaster ... python hackers ... students ...) Standing for better solution from you ... i will try to continue this action ... trying to make as fast as possible an egg of that (gplv3 if possible (not depending from me but the pip original one)) and then at a time a working egg will be ... you'll can make your .deb and us a pkgbuild for parabola This solution is maybe not the best, but, it show that it's possible! I attach a mostly self-describing example based on blacklist.txt of revision 1a6a485c9941912983db17005271aae0567cadea. The schema can and probably should be changed. There would be two changes in what is blacklisted: - all packages built from a single PKGBUILD would be removed - packages not included in Arch wouldn't be blacklisted Should we do these changes? There will be additional technical issues: - dbscripts will depend on recutils; is it a problem? We have it packaged (not built for i686 yet) and it doesn't have many dependencies. - dbscripts will need to have a pkgbase -> pkgname mapping It could be obtained from abs which is delayed. I believe this wouldn't be a problem in most cases, since the currently manual blacklisting is also done after a new package from Arch is included. - your-freedom needs to be generated differently - we should check what binary packages will be initially blacklisted by it to avoid introducing bugs when converting the list - some entries need determining their "type" recfix will consider it incorrect otherwise, and maybe some of these packages are now free (and users ask why they are blacklisted). - wiki articles need updating We could implement additional scripts automating blacklist management: - finding all packages which should be blacklisted for depending on a removed package (to add with Type: depends in the example) - finding replacement packages which aren't really available - listing packages without upstream reports (unless they have Type: distro or Type: branding) The change would introduce these problems: - the blacklist file would be bigger, scripts fetching it often could need changing - blacklisting a package would need more typing?? this can be partially automated - scripts doing queries on the blacklist might be slower if it's big enough?? using grep instead of recsel in simple cases, or future recutils indexing support will solve this [0] https://www.gnu.org/software/recutils/ The example (please quote only the relevant parts when replying): %rec: Package %key: Base %sort: Base %mandatory: Type %type: Type enum + nonfree (has no free license or no source) + recommends (recommends a nonfree package) + depends (depends on a blacklisted package, name it in the Dependency field) + branding (has branding for other/non-FSDG distro) + distro (is distro-specific) + nonfree-source (source includes nonfree files) + useless (not useful without nonfree software) + nonfree-build (needs nonfree software to build) + kernel-module (includes kernel modules which need rebuilding) + java-binary (Java package not built from source) # ParabolaBugs is issueXX of https://bugs.parabolagnulinux.org/bugs/issueXX %type: ParabolaBugs regexp /issue[1-9][0-9]*/ %type: Dependency rec Package # Base and Other are pkgbases to blacklist. # Other fields for issue reports: # LibrePlanet is the fragment id of http://libreplanet.org/wiki/List_of_software_that_does_not_respect_the_Free_System_Distribution_Guidelines # Debian is the full bug URL # gNewSense is the full bug URL to Savannah # URL is an informative URL Base: abiword Type: recommends Reason: recommends nonfree fonts Base: abs Replacement: abs-libre Type: distro Reason: have to change default rsync dir to abslibre Base: abuse Replacement: abuse-libre Type: nonfree Reason: contains an unfree addon gNewSense: https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?33450 Base: abyssws Base: acetoneiso2 Type: recommends Reason: ask to download and install unfree poweriso Base: aif Replacement: aif-libre Type: distro Reason: pointed to an unfree abs, points to abslibre now Base: alienarena Type: depends Dependency: alienarena-data Base: alienarena-data Type: nonfree Reason: Some nonfree data (doesn't allow commercial redistribution). Does any of many pastebin clients included in our repos work with free server-side software? If we want to host a pastebin, do we really need one? labs.parabola.nu accepts text in issue descriptions and notes, and supports file attachments for e.g. whole build or X logs. We could more clearly state that it can be used for support questions. For that, in this case it is better to continue using mysql as it contains the complete kit. it's not a true alternative. I tested with all programs, and doesn't problem with them. It should clear state that it's the last version where this was checked, not e.g. the first one. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I find the Arch forums an interesting place. I hear that Parabola is not fully developed into a whole OS, but is in the process of becoming one. Do you think there would be anything to gain by setting up a Parabola forum, separate from the Arch one? Getting people talking about it in an environment for free sofware sound like a wonderful thing to me, since so many of the Arch users were only interested in technical stuff and convenience, rather than in our freedom. > > I was watching an interview with Richard Stallman on youtube. Everything should be in place now, I've changed the post-receive hook on hackers.git to actually pull the repo history instead of forcing a checkout (leaving changes untracked under .ssh). I also changed cgit to automatically load repos from /srv/git (it also finds them on subdirs). It may be heavier so I'll enable caching on nginx side later. Project description should be put on the repo.git/description file. Everything should work as expected now, if you get messages like this: fatal: '/abslibre-mips64el.git' does not appear to be a git repository Edit .git/config and add '/srv/git' before '/repo.git' because the ssh:// URI now requires the full repo path (if you know how to fix this please tell me). That way people can use parabola and know that all the software that they install from it's user repo is free software, completely. Kind Regards, Seth P.S. I'm not a Parabola dev but may be, once I have coding skills. Hi, thanks for the suggestion! It has been discussed before, but we probably didn't document our conclusions properly. * AUR is huge and as a community effort, it's awesome * Many PKGBUILDs are mislicensed so automatic conversion to PUR would be a PITA So, we did this: actual per-project and/otr user repositories, so there're [social], [artistic], [~fauno], [~mtjm] repos now. If you browse the packages on the web site you'll see there're several repos. -- D -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
