I've built glibc-2.14-6, not eglibc.  I don't know any arguments for the
migration and glibc is known to work and be used on other architectures
in Parabola.

We need to build the following packages:
1. binutils
2. gcc
3. binutils
4. glibc
5. check all packages with changed CFLAGS or LDFLAGS if they still need
   this to avoid compiler errors

I'll compile binutils.  Do you want to compile gcc?

Maybe we should also require newer kernel than 2.6.27 for glibc on
mips64el?  I don't know what would this change.

Our gcc was making binaries using /lib/ld.so.1 for N32 and
/lib32/ld.so.1 for O32, while /lib is used elsewhere for O32 and /lib32
for N32.  Bug https://bugs.parabolagnulinux.org/bugs/issue213 describes
how this could be changed.  It would have two benefits: not needing the
/lib -> /lib32 symlink not provided in new chroots, and make multilib
support possible in future (e.g. to use Debian packages to compile
gcc-ada, openjdk or ghc).

For personal reasons, after thinking a lot about this, I decided to

particionamiento con Testdisk, se queda bloqueada la compu. Es por el
disco. Ya lo he intentado varias veces y con varios sistemas operativos
libres. Parece que el disco tiene un defecto f?sico. ?Hay alg?n softawre
que identifique ese defecto f?sico y lo marque para no usar ese sector del
disco? Gracias por sus recomendaciones.

generalmente uso `fsck -cfk -v` para encontrar los bloques defectuosos. ya me
pas? varias veces que si hay un bloque da?ado el disco no quiere iniciar
o tirar errores de conexion (los ves en el log del sistema). 

sino inicia con un livecd y corre las pruebas de smart, con palimpsest se ve
(la "utilidad de discos" de gnome).

trata de no realizar escrituras sobre el disco, lo recomendable es hacer una
imagen iso con dd a otro disco que este bien y trabajar sobre eso.

Currently updating abslibre-mips64el requires manually merging PKGBUILDs with
changed arch array to include mips64el.  I believe that storing this data in
separate files can make this need less manual work and provide more information
useful for packagers.

For a package "foo" known to work on i686 and x86_64, known to not work on
mips64el, unknown to work on sparc64 (just another architecture for the example)
the following files should exist:
- foo/PKGBUILD
- foo/arch-i686
- foo/arch-x86_64
- foo/noarch-mips64el

The content of arch-* and noarch-* files would be completely ignored by the
tools, maybe with links to bug reports or information that the package is
completely useless without specific hardware/software not available on that
architecture in case of noarch-* for use by developers.

libremakepkg could modify the PKGBUILD to include the line "arch=(i686 x86_64)"
in the copy used by makepkg.

The following algorithm could be used to change existing arch arrays:
1. add elements for arch-*
2. remove elements for noarch-*

This would keep existing PKGBUILDs working and require only adding one line to
mark it as working on mips64el.

Separate noarch-* would make the distinction between packages not tried on
mips64el and packages known to not work there (valgrind, most native code
generators, etc) clear, making it easier for contributors to know if a package
needs building on mips64el.  Removing the package directory from
abslibre-mips64el currently can do the same, but it would be more complex if we
supported more architectures.

Since we build all packages for upload with libremakepkg (or fullpkg which uses
libremakepkg) and it works well also for non-uploaded packages, I don't expect
making PKGBUILDs not directly useful on mips64el without this tool to be a problem.

I proposed this change initially on the IRC channel when discussing using a
separate git repo for each package, or some way of branching to limit time spent
on merging Arch changes.  It's possible that this issue can be done mostly
separately and partially solve this problem without changing the repo organization.

Building gnutls-3.0.4-2 on x86_64 works passing this test.  I don't know
gnutls, it isn't a crash or a widely known MIPS-specific problem, and I
haven't found any related bug reports.

I recommend asking on an upstream mailing list.

Reporting such problems on our bug tracker makes them easier to find.

Reporting it here, since packages sometimes break due to changed sonames of
libraries used (issue220 is a recent example).

This algorithm if used by db-update or a similar script should be able to find
the problem without waiting for user reports:

upload of package P:
  for each library L in P:
    write P provides L
  for each used library L previously in P:
    if L not in P:
      for each package Q using L:
        rebuild Q
  for each binary B in P:
    for each library L used by B:
      write P uses L

"rebuild" here means "report to an architecture-specific list that a rebuild is
needed".

"libraries" are ELF shared objects, considered different when having different
sonames.  We could do the same for Python modules built for different Python
versions, or packages for GHC, SBCL, etc for different exact versions of these
packages.

Having a different package name and being able to install several different
versions of the same library would solve this without needing to wait for a
packager to rebuild all packages using the library, although it would require
much larger changes.

supporting several versions of the same library is a no-no for archway lovers :P

does it happen often? are they always the same packages? are they ours or arch's?

i know this happens for mplayer-libre with x264 updates and unarchiver with
gnustep's. is there a reason why the program links to a versioned lib instead
of the lib? iirc .so.xx are symlinks to the actual .so files and the binaries
work ok with the dirty and old symlink one-to-the-other fix.

We don't have exact statistics on that.  There are not more than two
bugs reported for such issue (I'm not sure if the subversion mips64el
bug shows this issue; ghostscript-libre with libidn was a different
issue).

The libpoppler.so file is used by ld when building the program using it,
the binary will contain a reference to libpoppler.so.18 (since
libpoppler.so specifies this).  When running this binary ld.so will
use libpoppler.so.18.  The libpoppler.so.18.0.0 name is not important.

The reason for using different sonames (the things after .so) is that
they have different ABIs for programs to use.

For example, when a structure defined in a header file is changed and
the library is rebuilt with a different soname, programs previously
built for it will still look for the previous one.  If they find the new
library instead, they will probably crash or do other bad things due to
different structure layout assumed by them and the library (removing a
function and using a macro for new programs to use different functions
instead will probably lead to clearer missing symbol errors).  Building
new programs with the modified header file and linking them to the new
library will make them work with the new library.

There are good ways of maintaining a library without changing its ABI
often, e.g. current glibc and gtk2 can be used with very old programs.
I don't know why poppler doesn't do this, there might be more reasons
for this in libraries written in C++ (although Qt?4 has stable ABI).

I've spliced together the arch PKGBUILD for 3.0.4, the out of date 2.5 
from parabola, and a little of my own tidying up into this PKGBUILD:

which is my first attempt at making a -libre package.

I have sifted through to check for copyright problems and found none 
other than the two that were in 2.5-libre (psf and usf) which prohibit 
commercial usage.
I have added --disable-psf to allow it to compile without whining about 
the missing plugins I deleted; however, currently, people compiling from 
source with simply ./configure will recieve and error and will have to 
work it out themselves or read the PKGBUILD to see the note I put in.
I have build, installed and used the package on x86_64 without any known 
trouble.

I think my license=(), and therefore arch's, is wrong, as the package is 
a bundle of plugins of type GPL, LGPL, and a bunch of custom BSD looking 
ones. I'd like comments from others before I try to fix it.

Also, the -libre source is currently on my VPS until <fauno> or who ever 
gives me repo access and I learn how to do those kind of things.

Please use "git diff" or "diff -u" to make unified diffs, they are
easier to read and can be used by patch.

I prefer writing mksource so that it doesn't fetch the upstream source
if it was already fetched, this makes debugging such functions much
easier.  There are probably more PKGBUILDs using wget like yours.

Where exactly psf prohibits commercial usage?  Its MIPS emulator without
any licensing information might also be a problem.

It's common to need to pass arguments to configure or edit configure.ac,
Makefiles, or source files for a package to build.  It's not a problem
generally, although patching the source to not try to build psf would
be more elegant (the build system might make this difficult).

It should list all licenses.  I haven't done this for
e.g. texlive-core-libre, although here it would probably not take a very

Hi! We currently have a few happy users, but our porting work is not yet
complete, so if users need a particular software they either have to build it
by themselves or ask us to do it. But I can say there's progress everyday, it's
mostly in hack state :)

Also, this doesn't mean Parabola isn't useable at all, I for instance am
running a quite stable XFCE desktop, and I even used the yeeloong to stream
a conference (where I burn the audio card too, but that was another matter)[0].

You can find some screenshots here[1].

Is there something in particular you need? So far we have found trouble with
video playback and libreoffice build, but one of our devs did a few changes
that will allow us to build O32 binaries where N32 results in unstable or
unbuildable software.

There are several packages like a JDK, GHC, SBCL, SWI-Prolog where it's
nontrivial to build or fix them to work on MIPS N32.  I used a gNewSense
chroot for Java or Haskell programming and maybe for OpenOffice.org.

KDE also works, with just few more errors than on x86_64.  (Although we
currently have a mix of 4.7.1, 4.7.2 and probably other versions; many
packages are not built.)

More changes are needed for O32, since we don't have libraries for it
and all programs look for N32 libraries in paths where O32 libraries are
usually found.

The only video playback problem which I know is mplayer2 trying to use
OpenGL output, this can be easily fixed.  There is no
xf86-video-siliconmotion yet, so scaled video probably isn't playable
now.

Currently Parabola is installed on mips64el by unpacking a tarball and
changing some configuration.  Updating the tarball would probably make
this easier and quicker, since there were many changes made later,
including the hda?->?sda move.

I have been working a little on this last option. I have to do some tests yet.

Jxself told us gnome.org is providing Gnome 3.2 live CDs using OpenSUSE and
he's requesting them to promote a libre distro.

So he propposes to create a Parabola live CD with Gnome on.

Encyclomundi will we in charge of working on this once jxself gets a reply
about it. If you want to help please contact encyclomundi.

Lo que pas? fue que se reinici? la m?quina. No estoy seguro de si fue

hosting provider), to add the core images of Parabola GNU/Linux for install
on the vps servers (KVM), after 24 hours,[2][3][4] the images are now
available for install.

BuyVM offers high quality hosting with Hurricane Electric connectivity (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Electric) at low cost, and by
default, all servers come with 16 IPv6 addresses automatically bound.
