[Assist] Boot process halts before getty is reached

It sounds like a videocard/framebuffer issue to me. 
Easy way to check is while at the grub menu hit 'e' to edit
change the GFX_PAYLOAD= to "text" it probably says "keep" right now.

then try booting.. That should help prevent switching to framebuffer mode.

see if that gets you farther. If so we may be able to Dx whats screwy with the
framebuffer once you are into a VT.
