I restarted without addons and the music still wouldn't play. I just get this error: "Unable to play audio. Your browser must support native playback of MP3 or you must have the Adobe Flash Player installed." I was able to play audio just fine without Flash a few months ago, so I assume there's something wrong with MP3 playback. Or maybe it's just me. Facebook and Bandcamp both rely on non-free code, so I am a bit shocked to see this question being discussed here. Not to mention that MP3 is a tainted and patented audio format. I'd check for you, but I would prefer not to run the ambiguously licensed embedded player. Way I see it, if it doesn't work, Icecat developers protecting you from non-free web code is probably the reason. Of course, in the end it's your choice to whether to run non-free code or not, but I feel like it defeats the purpose of using Parabola. It?s a trade-off. While I tell people to use e-mail or XMPP to write me private messages, something that they want to be announced publicly needs to be on Facebook as long as that?s what most people in the audience use. LibreJS is horribly slow. Also I don?t need it, because the sites I use either don?t require JavaScript (most of them) or really are proprietary (Facebook and university sites). Also, there are a number of websites that run nonfree code but I have no control over that. IceCat, like Iceweasel, runs nonfree Javascript. Even music that I get as MP3 I convert to OGG. If IceCat devs are protecting from nonfree code being run, they weren't doing that before, so unless I can confirm that the reason these things aren't playing is because of that, instead of something that broke, then...you see what I'm saying? And again, I was led to think this was a bug rather than a freedom thing because Iceweasel plays the music. So I doubt that the reason is nonfree code -- I think it's more to do with breakage. I've tried safe mode, refreshed icecat (removing all settings), removed with -Rsn then pac -S icecat again, but I can't shake it. When I start icecat in the terminal (to be able to view the errors and complaints) the first thing that happens is: (process:13950): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed As soon as I hit play on a song, I get this error in the terminal: ** (icecat:13340): CRITICAL **: gst_app_src_set_size: assertion 'GST_IS_APP_SRC (appsrc)' failed (Since upgrading a couple versions ago I've also experienced freezes but that might be a totally separate thing.) I did a search and found that this error message has appeared in Firefox and Iceweasel as well, and that the culprit was gstreamer. So I went to about:config and set media.gstreamer.enabled to false, then hit play: no error messages, and no music either. My debugging skills are limited so I'm not sure what else I can do about this. I do agree that LibreJS is rather slow, which is why I use NoScript to simply prevent any JS from running. If I really need JS for the site, I can determine if it's trivial enough or if it's free. I think LibreJS' biggest problem is the way it reads licenses. Either way, you are free to run whatever you want, I am just seriously questioning Parabola's integrity as a free software system, especially after witnessing the long thread in [Dev] discussing whether to call the Arch distro GNU/Linux or not. I also want a good free AGPL?d OStatus server implementation to eventually exist. When I?m less busy learning for exams I want to help build free software. It is the only way to make software that may actually be good and useful in the long term. However, Facebook is a content hosting platform and not only an application. And it?s where the content is. When and only when there are good OStatus implementations I will try to convince others to switch. I don?t particularly like JavaScript-requiring PHP implementations of OStatus. Facebook is worse though and sandboxing is getting better on GNU/Linux (go Flatpak!), so I may just try putting one on my rented server. Sergei, no need to question: afaik, the Parabola hackers have worked hard to create the strictest standards for software and culture freedom of any FSDG-compliant distro, going beyond the FSDG requirements and removing Free software that has content with creative commons licenses like CC-by-ND. I doubt any distro is more strict with licensing than this one. Interestingly, you only get... ** (icecat:4487): CRITICAL **: gst_app_src_set_size: assertion 'GST_IS_APP_SRC (appsrc)' failed ...once. Whereas with my bad gstreamer plugins, I had the error repeating over and over. So let's narrow down the culprit. I reinstalled what I had. I can still play music. Now, I realized that what I was missing is gst-libav. Only when I remove gst-libav does the problem get reproduced. So, installing **gst-libav** fixes it and I can keep my other packages. It's just that I was seriously shocked when I started getting [Dev] *and* [libreplanet-discuss] pings mostly centered around wondering if Parabola should respect Arch in disrespecting GNU. I personally think it shouldn't even be a question in a dedicated community and it should definitely not require RMS' personal input. Then we get questions discussing the use of proprietary SaaSS on [Assist]. I do sincerely apologize for the bikeshed, I just couldn't help but to raise a few eyebrows. I agree that we don't need to respect Arch's disrespect, but sometimes nice people don't realize that, but it's helpful to remind them. > Then we get questions discussing the use of proprietary SaaSS on > [Assist]. I'm scratching my head as to how you listen to music before you buy it. Do you just go to the store and buy it? If it's not in a torrent, do you just not listen to the artist? Or is music trivial enough to abstain from compared to say, online banking? You block all JavaScript, presumably except for the things that matter. In the end, the [Assist] query *was a technical issue* because as I have stated repeatedly Iceweasel did not show the same behavior. Had I assumed that the IceCat devs were trying to protect me from nonfree software on the Internet, I would have never discovered that I was missing a gst-libav plugin. Lack of this plugin could also have broken a website that *was* running on Free JavaScript. Free software working with nonFree software is only incidental. Had the website been the cause, -- and they are not, because I contacted them asking if they changed their website recently, and they had not -- then it would have been a freedom issue preventing the playing of media. In which case, asking how to get around that would be out of bounds. But one has to determine the reason, not assume. I agree with Florian that one makes tradeoffs even if temporarily, but the important thing is that those tradeoffs be the user's decision. > > I do sincerely apologize for the bikeshed, I just couldn't help but to > raise a few eyebrows. > > Cheers, > > > > _______________________________________________ > Assist mailing list > Assist at lists.parabola.nu > https://lists.parabola.nu/mailman/listinfo/assist > From sradms0 at openmailbox.org Sat Jul 2 23:35:44 2016 From: sradms0 at openmailbox.org (Scott Adams) Date: Sat, 2 Jul 2016 18:35:44 -0400 Subject: [Assist] Issue mounting device with 'pmount' and 'mount' In-Reply-To: <20160701155131.GA1245@gmail.com> References: <3ce69549-63f7-a1a5-6a04-4b2d970d8a23@openmailbox.org> <0a87cf15-f11b-3066-09c7-f48cccade87b@fastmail.fm> <20160701155131.GA1245@gmail.com> Message-ID: Aldo, That is actually it. You can test the bank?s website server using https://www.ssllabs.com (it?s Software-as-a-Service-Substitute, but it works and I don?t know a more free alternative). If they have major security issues, that may be the reason you are seeing the error and you should notify your bank because their site is not safe and *will* break on other browsers as well in the future. Another possible reason is issues with JavaScript. Icecat by default disables non-free JavaScript. Epiphany executes non-free JavaScript but may not be compatible with their site.
