Subject: [Assist] ec fonts

I have encounter the following problem in the compilation of LaTeX
documents which require popular T1 font encoding (header
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}) in pdflatex.

kpathsea: Running mktexmf ecrm1095
! I can't find file `ecrm1095'.

This has already been discussed on the mailinglist [1,2] and switch to
a unicode TeX engine such as XeTeX or LuaTeX has been
suggested. Unfortunately, this is not viable solution for me, as the
document style I'm using requires T1 encoding.

The T1 encoding is provided by ec fonts [3]. Those are covered by a
license which requires modified version to use a name different from
the name of any prior version.

According to the Parabola wiki [4,5] and Fedora Legal Audit [6], those
fonts are of incompatible (non-free) licences. However, this is in
conflict with the Free Software Foundation statement [7], who
recognise the specific restriction on the distribution of modified
version as annoying issue, but since TeX allows to create filename
mappings, it qualifies the font as free in this context.

Those fonts are normaly distributed as part of "cm-super" package,
which is a part of other exclusively free distributions such as
Trisquel [8].

My question is, would it be possible to include those fonts to Parabola?

Yes.  This needs three things:

- relicensing of all things under the MeX license (possibly forbidding
  modification and restricting selling copies), including the PL fonts;
  please recommend CC0

- a proof that the EC fonts author had a permission to include code
  derived from the PL fonts under the EC fonts license

- proper packaging for EC fonts in Arch/Parabola, with all files
  required by the license being included

Does anyone have any references/URLs related to this, i.e. where/how to
take the next steps?
For example, does EC fonts have a homepage? Is the author's email address
known?
How are they currently being removed from Parabola's TeXLive packages?

good morning, I'm experiencing what I think is kernel panic after every
time I try to reboot or shutdown the machine.

the screen goes black and the capslock led goes on-off, then have to do
a hard shutdown.

this started after an upgrade made on March 28th, which an upgrade on
April 8th didn't solve

It seems that the cm-super is already included as part of
texlive-core, but the ec fonts are not part of that package (I'm sorry
for the confusion).

Instead, it seems, that those files are part of some other package,
which seems to be missing in Parabola. I have found the following
reference to the "ecrm" fonts in the list of files in the
texlive-coreon the Arch website
(https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/texlive-core/files/):

usr/share/texmf-dist/fonts/source/jknappen/ec/ecrm1000.mf
usr/share/texmf-dist/fonts/tfm/jknappen/ec/ecrm1000.tfm

I'm quite new here and am not sure, how exactly the packaging works
and which package does provide those fonts then. But it seems to me,
that the ec fonts are be free (see
https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#ecfonts).
