GNOME works but only on one monitor (I own two monitors DVI (1920x1080) and VGA (1360x786)) with the wrong resolution and modes. I have not tested my configurations on other free systems. It exists in texlive-core package from Arch Linux, but does not in the texlive-core package from Parabola's libre repo. I am using doxygen for a project, and it is generating latex output, which when I try to compile, complains of missing ecrm1000 font. Are there any ways I can avoid this problem? Perhaps, there are alternative fonts I can use. Please help. Many thanks, Arun I. It is free, while it contains code from the PL fonts claiming both to be public domain (in a jurisdiction where people cannot release their works into the public domain), forbidding modification and restricting selling. I don't know if their authors gave an explicit permission to use it under a different license, nor if they were asked for clarifying their license. (When I checked, not all files from the EC fonts were included in the Parabola package, violating their free license.) > Are there any ways I can avoid this problem? Perhaps, there are > alternative fonts I can use. Please help. Use a Unicode TeX engine (XeTeX or LuaTeX) with OpenType fonts and fontspec package, or the QX encoding for 8-bit TeX engines. Don't choose the T1 encoding regardless of what font you use, it always needs the EC font metrics. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... You say that in other free distros the monitor is detected and works, right? Try to check which modules[1] are loaded in that distro, and the package to which it belongs. But search only for those modules related to the video and/or graphic card (otherwise you will end with a bunch of unnecessary trash). The next step would be looking at your Parabola system, and see if the modules loaded by other free distro are loaded by your system, if not, looking to load them and if they aren't available looking for a way to obtain them or information to why they aren't included with the kernel or in the repository, etc. Kuba Kukielka writes: > Hello, > I have found more useful info. If you have pdflatex, you already have xelatex and lualatex. > > Nice, but, this works also for things like python-sphynx or Emacs muse exporting to PDF? This problem always > make any export to PDF fails, is very problematic. I have not used python-sphynx or emacs muse. But, I did use asciidoc. In asciidoc, you generate docbook code and run it through dblatex to generate a pdf. So, when invoking a2x, you can ask dblatex to use xetex as backend like so a2x --dblatex-opts="-b xetex" yourasciidocfile.txt Likewise, I am assuming there are ways in which you can somehow convince python-spyhnx and emacs muse to use the xetex backend. Otherwise we couldn't explain why both monitors works fine in one distro but not in Parabola. I have tried the most popular GUIs (GNOME, KDE, LXDE and XFCE) and they work fine but had the monitor problems that were mentioned before (using KDE at the moment though I have used GNOME previously though my display manager is stil GDM because I have had the best experience with it so far (But I might try KDM because of the customisation)). > I guess you're using gnome3 with the fallback (you have an ATI GPU...). I am not sure if the kernel (libre package) has the radeon i2c enabled but I am trying older versions of linux-libre (checking from disros that have the monitors working, using uname -r). I do have the screens connected at all times and I don't think it is the VBIOS' fault because both monitors work at boot (though mirrored but I can't fix that) and because other systems worked with my resolution. But I might be wrong because I don't know how to check. I will also reply when I have the kernel compiled. I looked at some other free systems (GNewSense, Triquel and the Parabola graphical image) and I took the kernel versions of the ones that worked using uname -r. I tried to compile the linux-libre kernel using these commands; (I first changed directory after extracting the archive) make O=/home/kzer-za/build/kernel menuconfig make O=/home/kzer-za/build/kernel make O=/home/kzer-za/build/kernel modules_install install (I used these commands when I was logged in as root) Then I copied the bzImage and pasted it root and renamed it as "vmlinuz-linux-libre". However, I was able to manually edit a few files in the build and get it working with xelatex. Here's what I did. I first generated latex output using sphinx-build sphinx-build -b latex sourcedir builddir Then in the generated latex Makefile, I replaced all instances of pdflatex with xelatex. sed -i Makefile 's/pdflatex/xelatex/g' I also modified the generated tex file removing packages inputenc and fontenc, and all calls to \DeclareUnicodeCharacter. I added the package fontspec. Then, I built it using make, and I got my final pdf output. All the above can be automated by writing script files or custom makefiles. But, ideally, it would be nice if sphinx-build has some option which would allow the user to choose the latex backend to use. It sounds like a systemd version. So I guess at that point the kernel already finished booting and it somehow "seems to freeze" after in the userspace booting procedure. Good point, since it seems to stop after systemd startup so my guess is that it just doesn't show anything on the screen after loading the GPU driver. So why not preventing that module from loading at first? That way it will keep using the display mecanism that the provides. You could then use the working screen to setup ssh and try to make better kernel+Xorg drivers work. Denis. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I have compiled the kernel, but mkinitcpio does not add any modules to it meaning that it cannot boot properly. (See https://lists.parabola.nu/pipermail/assist/2014-November/000355.html if you can help me) Currently I am using the Linux kernel because it works but I want linux-libre installed instead.
